We started Green Streets as a storm water mitigation company in Cincinnati.
Green Streets was started in Cincinnati Ohio as a storm water mitigation company primarily. Cincinnati, like so many communities in the United States is under “Consent Decree”. In other words we are being sued by the E.P.A. for dumping raw sewage in local water ways. Our Metropolitan Sewer District and SD1 do not want to, they have to, and they have no choice. When water treatment is inundated by rain water run off often polluted by raw sewage as well as parking lot pollution, debris, sediment, chemicals must be bypassed to preserve the drinking water for the community they serve. Not only locally but around the country and the world this “practice” has been going on for decades. The E.P.A. is kind enough not to fine us annually as long as we are working towards a solution. So the goal finally has become to stop and or slow rain water from making it to the combined storm sewers in the first place, and it is our mission as well.
Rain Barrels and Cisterns seemed like a good place to start.
Then Green Roofs were added to our services, Rain Gardens, Living Walls, flower boxes and so on. If the water is being soaked up by a plant, the plant not only consumes some of the water, it even holds it back. Plants even fully saturated will hold back water through the root systems and release it over hours, quite often long after the rains have passed. This aspect alone helps CSO’s from becoming overwhelmed and or reduces the time span in which they are. In addition plants consume Co2, provide oxygen, and habitats.
